John Taber on So-Cal Linux Expo

Also at the UPHPU meeting last week, John Taber spoke about his trip to the Southern California Linux Expo:

  • Andi Gutmans spoke about the upcoming Zend framework. The tone was to not expect too much.
  • The controller part was working but the ActiveRecord part wasn’t going to be released initially.
  • They don’t want the Zend framework to be a tight framework, the way Ruby is, requiring “all or nothing”.
  • The Zend framework is one of three strategy pillars. The 2nd is Eclipse. The 3rd is improved documentation.
  • These improvements should make PHP more corporate friendly.
  • Yahoo and IBM are driving forces behind PHP and Zend improvements.
  • Of all the PHP MVC frameworks, John said the most talked about ones at the conference were probably Symfony and Cake.
